Before we can start to discuss oily skin care, it’s important to understand what causes oily skin first. Put simply, oily skin is a result of excessive production of sebum (which is a naturally produced oily skin substance). As everyone knows, an excess of everything is bad, so this is the same for excessive sebum. When this happens, it will lead to clogging of your skin pores which will result in accumulation of dead cells and this well form pimples/acne. Plus, when you have oily skin, your looks will be spoiled too. So taking care of an oily skin is as important as the skin care for any other type of skin.
Basically, what oily skin care will do is remove excessive sebum or oil from the skin. But you have to be careful not to remove all the oil. Oily skin care starts with the use of a cleanser, but not all cleansers will work. You should choose a cleanser that contains salicylic acid i.e. a beta-hydroxy acid that will retard the rate of sebum production. You should clean you skin twice a day, and in hot and humid conditions, even more.
The largest part of the oily skin care products are oil-free, but you should check the ingredients before you go ahead and buy the product. This is especially important if you want to buy a product that is labeled ’suitable for all skin types’, instead of ‘oily skin care product’. Oily skin care is also dependent on the degree of oiliness, when your skin isn’t too oily, some of these ’suitable for all’-products could work for you. But when your skin is extremely oily, you should only use the types for oily skin. The second step in your skin care routine should include an alcohol based toner (for extremely oily skin), you do this after the cleansing. However, excessive toning can harm your skin, so don’t overdo.
The use of a mild moisturiser is the next step in your oily skin care routine. But you should determine the need for this step by the degree of oiliness of your skin. When you decide to include this part, you should choose one that is oil-free, wax-free and lipid-free.
As far as the oily skin care products go, you might need to try out a few before you arrive at the one that is really suitable for your skin.
When these steps don’t give you the result you desire, you should make an appointment with a good dermatologist to get some professional advice. He could prescribe stronger oily skin care products like vitamin A creams, retinoids, sulphur creams etc , which can help counter the problems of oily skin.
